Ocean
The Ocean Currency Network aims to unite the worlds ocean data, and develop solutions and incentives to protect and restore marine ecosystems, promoting a regenerative blue economy.
Description
OCN unites the world's ocean data sets and creates products and technology to encourage and incentivize practical citizen data collection. Their Ocean AI and BlueSense platfors use machine learning to centralize, visualize, translate, and provide insights on ocean data from all over the planet in one dashboard. Some use cases for the data include discovery of anomalies and danger zones, holding entities accountable, encouraging healthier business practices, engaging coastal communities, improving conservation efficiencies, and informing policy design. Beyond just creating ways to combine and collect more data, OCN designs products, systems and communities to collect the data necessary to interpret overall ocean health and restore marine ecosystems.

Business Model
OCN may have a mixed business model likely including a subscription-based service providing access to their ocean data analysis and insights. This could be valuable for governments, NGOs, research institutions, or even private companies involved in ocean-related activities (e.g., fisheries, shipping). They may also engage in Project-Based Funding working with foundations, government agencies, or consortiums of businesses with a stake in ocean health. OCN also runs the Furthermore Foundation which is a nonprofit which provides tools to measure ocean data and offers financial incentives for contributions to ocean data collection.
Risks & Limitations
- Data verification and accuracy relying heavily on ai and potentially user-generated data
- Data security and ownership of contributors need to be clearly defined and protected. accessibility and equity of participation in data collection might be limited by access to tech
- Focus on value of ocean health data may be difficult to quantify
- Risks over financialization
